Recommendation 1. Terminology Chronic lung failure is defined as a permanently reduced lung function and daily symptoms limiting daily activities despite optimal standard therapy. Palliative care can be started at this point. Terminal lung failure is present when a patient with chronic lung failure meets the criteria of being terminally ill and when life expectancy is limited to weeks or a few months. Imminently dying is when death is expected shortly i.e. within hours or a few days
