Genetic Basis of the Mosaic Dominance

Each color pattern form is determined by a particular cis-regulatory allele of pannier (symbolized with orange circles and black squares). In heterozygous individual carrying a pnr allele from the Red-nSpots form (A) and a pnr allele from the Black-4Spots form (B₁), the mosaic color pattern reflects pannier expression pattern, which is the sum of the two allelic forms. For each individual in (A), (B₁), and (C₁), the left elytron shows Pannier expression pattern, and the right elytron shows the corresponding adult pigmentation pattern. (B₂) and (C₂) show Pannier expression pattern in the presumptive area shown in (B₃) and (C₃), respectively. Note that in the heterozygote (C₁), Pannier expression pattern prefigures the ectopic formation of black pigment in the anterior red patch (red dotted lines in B₂ and C₂).
