Illustrations of the major life cycle stages of Plasmodium parasites are provided, with a designation of whether total proteomics has been reported (filled circles) or not (empty circles) in four major species (Pf = P. falciparum, Pv = P. vivax, Pb = P. berghei, Py = P. yoelii) or others (key provided in the lower right). Hypnozoites are known to be present in P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. cynomolgi infections (empty circles), but not in P. falciparum, P. berghei, or P. yoelii infections (gray filled circles). It is noteworthy that while blood stage parasites have been extensively studied, mosquito stage and liver stage parasites have not. In some cases, all proteomic data for a life cycle stage is derived from a single study with a single species.
