Certain nonproteinogenic amino acids closely mimic those in the universal genetic code. Graph shows ∆∆G mutant scans for proteinogenic (black) and nonproteinogenic amino acids (rainbow). MeB shows a similar ∆∆G profile to Pro in the folding and binding of α-helical PUMA (Top), whereas the ∆∆G profile of 3Th mimics Phe (Middle) and tBu mimics Leu (Bottom), in both PUMA and β-sheet CP2.
