(A) Unmodified pUC19 DNA (10 ng) was transformed in the S. Montevideo WT and ΔdpdE-dpdD::kan strains. (B) pUC19 DNA (10 ng) extracted from different mutant donor cells was transformed in S. Montevideo WT. (C) Unmodified pBAD33 DNA (10 ng) was transformed in the WT host and in each individual mutant strain containing pBAD24 or its derivative expressing the corresponding dpd gene in trans (with the exception of dpdJ that could not be cloned). The average of three experiments is shown, with error bars representing SD (*P < 0.05, ***P < 0.001, two-tailed Student’s t-test).
