Cell cycle diagram [118]. Beginning at the G1 phase, cells observe environmental conditions and await stimuli to begin the replication process. During the G1 phase, when the conditions are correct, the cells begin the replication process by synthesizing the required RNAs and proteins. In the S phase, the chromosomal DNA is replicated, and in the G2 phase, the cells prepare for mitosis. Mitosis occurs in the M phase
