Obese diabetic db/db mice exhibit a marked increase in cardiomyocyte size without a significant increase in the density of interstitial cells. A: wheat germ agglutinin (WGA) lectin histochemistry was used to quantitatively assess cardiomyocyte size. DAPI staining was used for the quantification of interstitial cell density. BD: both male and female db/db mice had a marked increase in cardiomyocyte size at 2 and 6 mo of age. EG: interstitial cell density was comparable between groups (n = 4 male mice/group, n = 4 female mice/group, n = 8 male + female mice/group).
