Cancer stem cells (CSCs) divide asymmetrically and give rise to one copy of self and one differentiated tumor progenitor cell. Tumor progenitor cells are no longer able to self-renew, they undergo symmetric division and form the terminally differentiated cells of the bulk tumor mass. Under stress, CSCs may undergo symmetric self-renewal increasing tumor resistance to therapy.
