Effect of LPS and MPTP on the A1 astrocytic phenotype in the SN. Immunofluorescent double labeling of GFAP and C3 shows the absent of C3 immunostaining in non-reactive astrocytes present in the control SN (A–C). A similar pattern was seen in the SN of animals treated with LPS (D–F) alone. Some neurotoxic astrocytes showing the A1 phenotype are present in the SN of animals treated with MPTP alone (G–I).
