Experimental design to assess the effects of acute hyperglycemia on corneal tissue structure in vitro. Extension of nerve fibers are evident by 14 days post-construct assembly with growth continuing up to 42 days. Effects of high-glucose conditions were evaluated to determine if elevated environmental glucose levels (shown in blue) mediate changes in cell viability, phenotypic markers, and nerve morphology.
