Table 3. Multi-variate adjusted analysis of significant outcomes in COPD patients undergoing 1–2 level PLFs.

Dependent variables Odds ratio (95% CI) P value
Total operative time (min) 0.003
   0–180 Ref
   >180 0.83 (0.73–0.94)
Length of stay (day) 0.008
   0–3 Ref
   >3 1.40 (1.32–1.48)
Discharge destination 0.002
   Home Ref
   Skilled care/rehab 1.28 (1.09–1.51)
Pneumonia 2.53 (1.62–3.97) <0.001
30-day readmission 1.31 (1.03–1.65) 0.025

Adjusted for age, race, BMI, co-morbidities (diabetes, smoking, dyspnea, functional status prior to surgery, CHF in 30 days before surgery, chronic steroid use, bleeding disorders, history of systemic sepsis), transfer status and ASA class. For discharge destination, pneumonia and 30-day re-admission, the outcome was also adjusted for total operative time and length of stay in addition to the before-mentioned variables. COPD, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease; PLF, posterior lumbar fusion; BMI, body mass index; CHF, congestive heart failure; CI, confidence interval.
