Phylogenetic tree showing the relation of MupG orthologs. The phylogenetic tree was constructed with RaxML from an alignment of 519 amino acid sequences, based on the Pfam entry PF05913, which lists putative orthologs of MupG (DUF871 domain proteins). The genus of Staphylococcus is marked by a red rectangle and includes MupG of S. aureus USA300, which was characterized in this study as a MurNAc 6P-glycosidase. Putative MurNAc 6P glycosidase (close orthologs of MupG) constitute a distinct clade, indicated by red lines. More distantly related MupG-like proteins constitute different clades that are indicated by black lines. Bacterial genera are color coded as indicated. See Supplementary Table 3 for a complete list of the proteins within this phylogenetic tree.
