MED13 serves as a crucial link between transcription factors (e.g., E2F family and SP1), coactivators, and the main mediator complex. The mediator complex recruits RNA polymerase II and its accessory factors, resulting in transcription of specific gene classes required for preimplantation embryo development. In the absence of MED13, its paralog MED13L partially compensates for this function.
