The possible interaction of melatonin and vitamin D. Symbol (R) refers to the sites in which vitamin D receptor are strongly expressed in the brain. It was speculated that the 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 acted as mediator, bringing the ‘message of light’ from the retina to the pineal glands, resulting in decreased melatonin synthesis.
