The three possible modes of electron transfer to the pMMO. (1) Redox-arm: The methanol dehydrogenase transfers electrons to the terminal oxidase which contributes to increasing the proton motive force (PMF), while the pMMO draws electrons from the quinone pool. (2) Direct coupling: Electrons from the oxidation of methanol are transferred directly to the pMMO. (3) Uphill electron transfer: Electrons from the methanol dehydrogenase feed back into the ubiquinol-pool.
