The G989I mutation likely causes a structural change in the BRI1 kinase domain. Shown on the left is the colored ribbon model of the crystal structure of the BRI1 kinase domain (Protein Data Bank no. 5LPY). The four hydrophobic amino acids that make up the conserved regulatory spine are shown with yellow spheres, Gly-989 is shown with purple spheres, Asn-938 is represented by pale blue spheres, and Ala-1023 is indicated by orange spheres. The relative positioning of the three tightly packed residues in wild-type BRI1 (WT), bri1-301, and bri1-707 is shown on the right. The mutagenesis of Gly-898 to Ile-989 (in bri1-301) or Glu-989 (in bri1-707) was performed with PyMol (http://www.pymol.org).
