Emodin dampened the development of DRA-induced asthmatic inflammation. (A) The schematic timeline showed that mice were sensitized with DRA on Days 0 and 5 and challenged with DRA on Days 12, 13 and 14. On Day 15, the mice were sacrificed for analysis of the asthmatic inflammation. In the emodin treatment group, the mice received intraperitoneal injections of emodin (20 mg/kg) 1 h prior to DRA administration on days 12, 13 and 14. (B) Infiltrated inflammatory cells in BAL fluid were stained with different markers for identifying eosinophils (Eos, Siglec F+CD11c) and macrophages (Mac, Siglec F+CD11c+), and then they were analyzed using flow cytometry. Total infiltrated cells (C), eosinophils (D) and lymphocytes (E) in BAL fluid were counted based on the total number of BAL cells and the percentage of different cell types. Values represent mean±SEM. n=5 mice per group, and ND stands for 'not detected'. ** P<0.01 between the indicated groups.
