Images of lacrimal glands from all three groups (n = 3 in each group). Lacrimal glands from the NC groups (A) and PBS-treated groups (D) maintained the same volume and color. By contrast, lacrimal glands from the PM_2.5-treated groups (G) were shrunken and became lighter. (H,E) Staining showed similar images of the maintenance of the complete structure of the lobe, duct, and acinar of lacrimal glands in both the NC and PBS-treated groups, and no inflammatory cells were observed (B,E). However, in the PM_2.5-treated groups, irregularly arranged lobes were found (H, red arrow head). TUNEL assay analysis detected no apoptotic bodies among all three groups (C,F,I).
