Unlike RARRES1 expressing cells, RARRES1 depleted cells increase de novo lipogenesis. This effect enables cells to improve mitochondrial respiration during starvation due to an increase in endogenous fatty acid availability. In RARRES1 expressing epithelial cells, glucose is mostly directed to lactate production in normal conditions. During serum starvation expression of RARRES1 increases and exasperates the lipid availability for fatty acid oxidation.
