The correlation between income and negative economic events at Grade 5 was estimated. All Grade 5 variables and Grade 9 substance use variables were allowed to correlate with all other Grade 5 variables and Grade 9 substance use variables. The residuals for mother and father distress at Grade 7 and the residuals for the Grade 11 substance variables also were allowed to correlate. Correlations are not displayed in the figure for clarity. Model controls for adolescent nativity (0=born in Mexico, 1=born in US) and adolescent acculturation.
