Growth of E. coli DH5α expressing effectors from pCH450 induced with 0.2% l-arabinose after 30 min of growth or effector and immunity protein from pCH450 and pTrc100, respectively. (A) Expression of phospholipase, WHH nuclease, and D123 effectors in E. coli shows growth comparable to that of the empty vector control (p450). Individual expression of these effectors does not contribute to bacterial growth inhibition under the conditions analyzed. (B) Expression of AHH nuclease decreases the growth rate of E. coli. Expression of both AHH and its immunity protein (AHH+i) negates the toxic effect of the effector alone; however, after 240 min a plateau in growth is reached due to protein overexpression.
