Autotrophic carbon budget in a coral–dinoflagellate symbiosis. The budget can be determined using ¹³C‐dissolved inorganic carbon (¹³C‐DIC), and measurements of gross photosynthesis and respiration of symbionts and host using oxygen measurements. The ¹³C can be followed within the symbiotic association, in particular the amounts retained in symbionts and host biomass. By applying adapted equations (Tremblay, Grover, Maguer, Legendre, & Ferrier‐Pages, 2012), the fate of the autotrophic carbon incorporated can be estimated under different conditions. The pie charts represent the percentage of the carbon incorporated into the host tissue and symbionts or lost after 24 hr under normal (high light), or under reduced light and high temperature conditions
