Trial name or title	Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (EOLIA)
Methods	A multi‐centre, randomized, open trial. 23 centres will participate in this project to be conducted within the REVA network
Participants	Patients with the diagnosis of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) not evolving favourably after 3 to 6 hours under optimal ventilatory management and maximal medical treatment
Interventions	Intervention group: ECMO (Quadrox®, Jostra®, Maquet®) Control group: conventional care
Outcomes	All‐cause mortality on day 60 following randomization
