Template-directed polymerization at sub-optimal Mg concentrations. a Mg ²⁺ levels were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Solutions with 5 mM MgCl₂ were formed in 25 mM Tris–HCl pH 8.0 with indicated anions and cations, followed by centrifugation at 14,000×g for 2 min. A portion of the supernatant phase was removed and diluted in water prior to measurement.
