Conversion of OH to EH in CcO May Occur via Initial Electron Transfer from Heme b to Heme a3a

aWe suggest that the subsequent electron transfer from heme a3 to CuB may occur through an “inner-sphere” mechanism utilizing a bridging hydroxide ligand, as shown. Formally, the CuBII reduction occurs by transfer of a hydroxyl radical (•OH) moiety.
