Classification of drusen. Drusen were classified according to their shape, homogeneity and internal reflectivity, as well as depolarising contents (top two rows). Furthermore, the consistency of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) signal—depicted in red colour—was evaluated, ranging from normal (1) to a complete absence of depolarising material (7). The presence of overlying foci—depolarising or not—was also assessed.
