Cells expressing transforming growth factor-beta (TGFβ) in the medullary region of mesenteric lymph nodes were observed most frequently in animals necropsied during the first 30 days post-irradiation, but TGFβ expression continued in a subset of animals throughout the observation period. The greater expression of TGFβ in the lymph nodes parallels the severity of the radiation-associated intestinal lesions in animals irradiated at 12 Gy.
