Iron-induced metabolic dysregulation is dependent on genetic background. High iron-fed LG/J mice have decreased body weight (a), caused in part by decreased adiposity (b), which is not seen in high iron-fed SM/J mice. Loss of adipose tissue is associated with altered glucose metabolism, assessed by intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (c), summarized by increased area under the curve (d).
