Glycobiology underpins the pathogenicity of the oral bacterium Tannerella forsythia. The unique protein-linked O-glycan of the bacterium was found to be involved in (i) the bacterium's establishment in oral plaque, (ii) manipulation of host defence mechanisms, (iii) adhesion to and invasion of host tissues and, eventually, (iv) tissue damage.
