Lectin-induced membrane invaginations. GUVs containing the synthetic fucosylated glycolipid FSL-Lewis a were incubated with Cy3-labelled RSL (200 nM, red colour). Confocal microscopy images from the equatorial plane of GUVs show lectin binding to the membrane (labelled with beta-BODIPY FL C₅-HPC, green colour) as well as inward membrane tubulation. GUVs were composed of DOPC/cholesterol/FSL-Lewis a/beta-BODIPY FL C₅-HPC (64 : 30 : 5 : 1 mol%) and prepared by the electroformation [105] technique. Scale bar: 5 µm. (Online version in colour.)
