The experimental paradigm (A) and correlation between deafness duration and cochlear implant (CI) speech outcome (B). F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (¹⁸F-FDG-PET) was performed prior to CI surgery. Imaging data were correlated with the duration of deafness, and speech scores measured at 1 year post-CI. CI speech scores were significantly correlated with deafness duration (r = −0.580, p < 0.001).
