COGNITIONS IN PERFORMING SELF-ESCAPE BEGIN WITH PERCEIVING THAT AN EVENT OUTSIDE NORMAL OPERATIONS HAS OCCURRED, DIAGNOSING THE EVENT AS AN EMERGENCY THAT COULD POTENTIALLY REQUIRE EVACUATION FROM THE MINE, AND THEN DETERMINING THAT EVACUATION AND SELF-ESCAPE WILL BE APPROPRIATE.
