Reduction of degrees of freedom through stacked rotation of the nucleosomes. On the left is a schematic representation of the definitions of ±θ used from simulation. On the right panel is the free energy of rotation of two stacked nucleosomes. At most the interaction is a difference of ∼2kBT. We show through this graph that separation distance and orientations are a much more dominant determinant of nucleosome interactions than relative rotation.
