Histology and sonographic correlation of the internal and external anal sphincter. a, b) The internal anal sphincter (IAS) is a continuation of the involuntary circular smooth muscle layer and appears hypoechoic at endoluminal ultrasound. The external anal sphincter (EAS) is voluntary/skeletal muscle continuation of the puborectalis muscle and of mixed echogenicity.
