Targets and immunologic functions of hypertonic and isotonic NFAT5. NFAT5 induced by hypertonic or isotonic stimuli maintains blood pressure homeostasis, induces T cell development and TH17 cell differentiation, and enhances antimicrobial activity and cell survival of macrophages. In addition, NFAT5-mediated proinflammatory alteration in macrophages skews CD4+ T cells to TH1 polarization.
