Targets and immunologic functions of hypertonic and isotonic NFAT5. NFAT5 induced by hypertonic or isotonic stimuli maintains blood pressure homeostasis, induces T cell development and T_H17 cell differentiation, and enhances antimicrobial activity and cell survival of macrophages. In addition, NFAT5-mediated proinflammatory alteration in macrophages skews CD4⁺ T cells to T_H1 polarization.
