The effects of an LC maternal diet on cortical neurogenesis. LC maternal diet between E11 and E17 leads to a reduction in the methylation potential (AdoMet:AdoHcy ratio) in the developing brain. Reduced methylation potential is accompanied by upregulation of miR-129-5p and downregulation of its target, EGFR protein, in cortical NPCs (radial glia). Reduced levels of EGFR, in turn, alter NPC self-renewal capacity, resulting in the reduction in the number of NPCs, as well as cortical pyramidal neurons migrating toward the upper layers of the CP.
