Schematic illustration of the geometry of the used NPs. After the synthesis of hydrophobically capped Fe₃O₄ NPs, the NPs were over-coated with three different derivatives of the amphiphilic polymer poly-(isobutylene-alt-maleic anhydride)-graft-dodecyl: PMA-Prop (P1), PMA (P2), and PMA-Furf (P3), leading to dispersion in aqueous phase. Afterward, these NPs were conjugated with different fluorophores: Coumarin 343-azide (D1), Dy605-amine (D2), and Cy5.5-maleimide (D3). On the right, a sketch of the respective coupling chemistries is shown.
