Hericium erinaceus (HE) administration at 60 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg decreased hippocampal cell deaths after pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus. Brain sections were stained with cresyl violet. (i) Magnified photomicrographs of CA1 subfield of the hippocampus, marked with a rectangle in the left picture. (ii) Magnified photomicrographs of CA3 subfield of the hippocampus, marked with a rectangle in the far-left picture. Note that vehicle (Veh)-treated animals showed extensive cell death in the CA1 and CA3 subfields of the hippocampus, compared to sham. HE treatment at 60 and 120 mg/kg could prevent cell death in CA1 but not CA3 subfield of the hippocampus, whereas 300 mg/kg of HE administration showed similar cell death with the group treated with vehicle.
