5 × 108 C. albicans cells were grown with 5 × 109P. gingivalis W83 or ∆K∆RAB cells in RPMI 1640 medium for 24 hours at 37 °C under normoxic or anoxic conditions. Proteins were identified with LC-MS/MS after cell surface shaving with trypsin and additional digestion of released protein fragments for 24 hours. The resulting lists of peaks were used to search against the SwissProt protein database. Protein ranking with indicated fold changes according to the averaged NSAFs was created after comparison of C. albicans surface-exposed proteins released from cells grown in mixed-species biofilms to the sample containing fungal surface-exposed proteins of C. albicans grown in a single-species biofilm. Markedly enhanced protein presence at the surface of the fungal cells is highlighted in bold (nc, not comparable; nd, not detected).
