Cyclic mechanical strain of bone marrow-derived macrophages. Macrophages were subjected to 10% mechanical strain for 5 h using the FlexCell system. Five-hour mechanical strain resulted in an F480+/iNOS−/Fizz1+ macrophage phenotype, suggesting that mechanical strain alone can promote macrophage activation toward a proremodeling phenotype.
