Further examples of methods leading to mixed-ligand MOFs. (a) A 2D MOF sheet is grown first, followed by addition of the second ligand to form a 3D layered compound. (b) Postsynthetic ligand exchange or modification leads to statistical mixtures when diffusion inside the MOF is fast. When diffusion is slower than the exchange or modification process, a core–shell structure is obtained.
