Elemental distribution on grain surfaces. Elemental maps captured by scanning electron microscopy for a quartz grain from a granite sample deployed in the humid (Calhoun hardwood forest) environment (Fig. 4d) that show the distribution of surface carbon and iron (mineral coating), subsurface silicon of underlying quartz, potassium and aluminum (likely from an adjacent feldspar) together with a SEM micrograph of the sample area.
