Probabilities (mean and 95% CI) of occupying the three behavioural states as a function of the covariates included in the multivariate HMM. Probabilities were calculated for each covariate and state separately by fixing the values of the remaining covariates at their respective means. All estimates were made using the categorical covariates sex (male) and sediment type (sand) as reference categories. CIs for the probabilities were obtained based on Monte Carlo simulation from the estimators’ approximate distribution as implied by maximum likelihood theory. Coefficients of the multinomial logistic regression underlying this figure are provided in Supplementary Table S1.
