Observed vs expected counts of highly related connections. A map of the study area is overlaid with 81 equally sized, approximately 5-km grid cells. For each grid cell, the ratio comparing the number of related connections (pairwise comparisons related ≥0.5 after excluding comparisons from the same reactive case detection event) to the number of connections expected is depicted by a color gradient. A ratio > 1 (red) indicates that the cell has more related connections than expected; a ratio < 1 (blue) indicates that the cell has fewer related connections than expected. We observed a similar multiplicity of infection (MOI) comparing individuals living within and outside of focal transmission hotspots (mean MOI, 1.62 among individuals living in focal transmission hotspots vs 1.92 among individuals living outside of focal transmission hotspots; Student t test, P = .28).
