Neurotrophic keratopathy (top panel) resulting from dysfunction of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve can lead to corneal degradation ranging in severity from mild epithelial irregularities to ulceration, perforation, and even blindness. Facial nerve palsy, which can result in lagophthalmos (bottom panel) is often seen in conjunction with NK, placing the cornea at greater risk for damage given the increased exposure in the setting of corneal anesthesia
