Methods Randomised, controlled, parallel group trial, unblinded
Participants 357 sedentary adults, free of cardiovascular disease (aged 50‐65 years)
Interventions 'High intensity' supervised exercise (60min predominantly aerobic, walking/jogging/cycling to 73‐88% max HR, 3 x wk) 
 'High intensity' home exercise (60min predominantly aerobic, walking/jogging/cycling to 73‐88% max HR, 3 x wk) 
 'Low intensity' home exercise (30min predominantly aerobic, walking/jogging/cycling to 60‐73% max HR, 5 x wk) 
 and control (continued with 'usual' activity)
Outcomes At one year treadmill performance was significantly improved in the three exercise groups. There was no difference in outcomes between the low and high intensity groups.
Participation rates were significantly better for the home‐based exercise groups
Blood lipid levels, weight and blood pressure were unchanged
