Table 2.

Depth distribution of the archaeal IPLs detected in the ETSP at the coastal station.

These distributions are normalized on the summed abundance (response units per Liter, r.u. L-1) over all depths of each IPL detected. IPLs are listed according to the core lipid and the polar head groups attached to them. GDGT, glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraether; MH, monohexose; DH, dihexose; HPH, hexose phospho-hexose; PG, phosphatidyl glycerol; PE, phosphatidyl ethanolamine. Color coding: from dark red to white corresponds to 42–32%; 32–22%; 22–12%; 12–0% of archaeal 16S rRNA gene reads. The table should be read in a vertical direction since the differences in MS response factors for different IPLs do not allow a direct comparison of the abundance of IPLs at one depth. IPL data from 60 m depth were not included neither discussed in the manuscript as the archaeal 16S rRNA abundance was under detection limit.
