Cleavage of collagens by SSL1. (A) Recombinant SSL1 (20 µg), SSL1 plus TLCK (1 mM; negative control), or collagenase of Clostridium histolyticum (0.2 U/ml; positive control) was incubated with fluorescent collagen Type I (40 µg/ml) at 37 °C for 6.5 h in a microtiter plate reader and the change in fluorescence was measured every 30 minutes throughout the incubation. Background fluorescence, determined by no-enzyme reactions (blanks) was subtracted from each value. Data were expressed as the mean ± standard deviation. (B) SSL1 (20 µg), SSL1 plus TLCK (1 mM), or collagenase of Clostridium histolyticum (0.2 U/ml) was incubated with fluorescent collagen Type IV (40 µg/ml), as described in Figure 6A.
