Immunohistochemical labeling of intramuscular platelet-derived growth factor receptor α-positive (PDGFRα+) cells in the monkey and mouse rectoanal regions. Intramuscular PDGFRα+ cells run parallel to the smooth muscle cells (SMCs) and are highly branched stellate-shaped cells in the monkey (A) and mouse (C) internal anal sphincter (IAS). Intramuscular PDGFRα+ cells also run parallel to SMCs in rectum but differ from the IAS in that they are more spindle-shaped (B, monkey; D, mouse).
