The purpose of this trial is to assess whether the combination of dexmedetomidine (DMET) with remifentanil produces a synergistic effect that results in lower analgesic requirements. Participants	Inclusion criteria: pregnant women, ASA I‐II, full term (37‐40 weeks), singleton fetus with cephalic presentation, first stage of spontaneous labour Exclusion criteria: known relevant drug allergy, significant respiratory depression from previous exposure to opioids, obstetric complications
Interventions	Remifentanil PCA + DMET versus remifentanil PCA + placebo
Outcomes	VAS pain scores, maternal and fetal complications, patients' satisfaction
